Why Serum presets sometimes open empty, and how to check before you buy

You buy a Serum preset bank, load a preset, and get silence or a thin buzz instead of the sound in the demo. Nothing is broken on your machine. In almost every case, the same thing happened: the preset is looking for a wavetable that never left the maker's computer.

What actually goes wrong

When a producer builds a preset on a custom wavetable, Serum does not store that wavetable inside the preset by default. It stores the path to the file on the machine where the preset was made. On your machine that path points at nothing.

Serum has a setting for this, Embed in Preset. Tick it and the wavetable travels with the preset. Leave it off and the preset only works for the person who built it.

It is one checkbox. Whole banks get sold without it.

How to tell it happened to you

Three signs, in order of certainty:

• Serum shows a missing file warning when the preset loads.
• The oscillator displays a default wavetable rather than the one in the demo video.
• The preset plays, but flat and thin, nothing like the audio preview.

If a whole folder behaves this way and only some presets are affected, that is the pattern: the maker embedded some and not others.

Two questions to ask before you buy

Does the pack need extra files installed? If the answer is a folder of wavetables to drag somewhere, the presets are not self-contained. That is not automatically bad, but it means one more thing to keep in sync, and it will break the day you change computer.

Which version of Serum was it built in? Serum 2 presets do not open in Serum 1. A pack that does not say which version it targets has not thought about the question.

What good looks like

A preset bank that is safe to buy will tell you, on the product page and before payment:

• the exact Serum version it needs;
• that presets are self-contained, with nothing to install;
• what the pack contains, counted, not described.

Why we mention it

We build our preset banks on factory content only. That is a deliberate limit: it costs us some sound design freedom, and it means a preset opens on your machine exactly as it does on ours, with nothing to install and nothing to go missing when you change computer.

When we start using custom wavetables, they will be embedded, and the product page will say so.

The short version

An empty preset is usually a missing wavetable, not a broken download. Before you buy any preset bank, check the Serum version and check whether anything needs installing. Those two questions filter out most of the packs that will waste your evening.
